Aspen Skiing Company Makes BUMPS FOR BOOMERS® Ski and Ride Exercise Series the Official Conditioning Program of Aspen/Snowmass Pros
The off-snow exercise program is designed for professional and recreational skiers to reduce injuries on the slopes(Aspen, Colo., December, 16, 2009) – Originally designed as a pre-ski conditioning program for Baby Boomers, the BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ® Ski and Ride Exercise Series was adopted by Aspen Skiing Company as the official ski conditioning program for their 2000+ ski and snowboard instructors, ski patrollers and lift operators. Aspen Skiing Company is the operator of the award-winning Ski and Snowboard Schools of Aspen/Snowmass.
According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, skiing is at the top of the list for sports-related injuries, totaling more than $5.57 billion in annual costs. Because skiing and snowboarding are high-activity sports, they can lead to injury without the proper “off-snow” conditioning.
The BUMPS FOR BOOMERS Ski and Ride Exercise Series – developed by Bill Fabrocini, a world-class Aspen, Colorado physical therapist and personal trainer – is designed to strengthen and build physical stamina in preparation for hitting the slopes. Initially created for the unique needs of aging Baby Boomers, the exercise series was expanded to a three-phase conditioning program encompassing the needs of professional and recreational skiers and snowboarders.
“Regardless of ability level, too often people make the mistake of assuming they can ski or snowboard themselves into shape,” said Fabrocini. “Skiing and snowboarding are demanding activities and off-snow conditioning should be done to reduce physical fatigue and minimize injury.”
The free, online Ski and Ride Exercise Series includes a self-screening test to evaluate present physical condition, a daily warm-up regimen, and a sequence of videos focused on exercises demonstrated by Fabrocini targeting upper body, core and lower body. A companion booklet accompanying the video series illustrates each exercise and provides guidelines for how to properly perform the movements. Both the Ski and Ride Exercise videos and booklet can be downloaded for free at www.bumpsforboomers.com.
“The health and wellness of our ski instructors and employees is of paramount importance to us,” said Jim Laing, Vice President of Human Resources, Aspen Skiing Company. “We recognize the BUMPS FOR BOOMERS Ski and Ride Exercise Series as an opportunity to increase the fitness level of our employees and reduce workforce injuries this winter season.”
Practiced by many Baby Boomers already, the BUMPS FOR BOOMERS Ski and Ride Exercise Series was initially created as part of the BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ski program to enable Boomers to reach their peak performance, reduce risk of injury, and extend the longevity of their skiing years.
“Many Boomers face physical challenges as they age and skiing can become an intimidating activity,” said Joe Nevin, Founder of BUMPS FOR BOOMER ski program. “The BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ski program and Ski and Ride Exercise Series teaches Boomer skiers the conditioning and skills needed to confidently ski powder and mogul runs.“
“Many Boomer skiers who incorporate the Ski and Ride Exercise Series into their conditioning regimen increase their athletic endurance, which enables them to achieve peak performance when skiing or snowboarding,” Fabrocini said.
BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ® - based in Aspen, Colorado – is the only mogul and powder skiing program in the United States that is designed by Baby Boomers, for Boomers, and taught by Boomers. The pioneering coaching method incorporates novel techniques to reduce knee stress and fatigue, as well as utilizes skiboards (mini-skis approximately three feet long) to help skiers achieve better balance and learn how to maintain speed control.
Exclusive to Aspen/Snowmass, BUMPS FOR BOOMERS ski program is offered for Baby Boomer skiers from December 2009 through March 2010. Boomers can participate in three-or four-day clinics, or choose to take private lessons.
